The name Ronald Mcdonald is recognizable throughout the entire world. A Mcdonald’s restaurant exists in 119 countries, with over 34,000 locations. Here in America, the name Ronald Mcdonald isn’t just related to a fun-loving restaurant clown but linked with a message of hope. The Ronald Mcdonald House Charities is an American organization with a stated mission to “…create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families”.

Who are they?

The Ronald Mcdonald House Charities (RMHC) is an American independent nonprofit organization that exists to assist in helping children and their families. RMHC was born in 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when the Philadelphia Eagles tight-end came face to face with the reality of family hospital relations. Fred Hill’s daughter, Kim Hill, was being treated for leukemia in 1974. Fred and his wife Fran became painfully familiar with waiting rooms, hard benches, and the reality of how families deal with diagnosed children. With the help of his teammates, McDonalds corporate, and the Shamrock Shake Fundraiser, they bought a house near the hospital, and the first Ronald McDonald House was born.

What do they do?

The RMHC helps provide stability and assistance to families across the United States. They primarily assist with the financial strain of having a child in the hospital, whether it’s providing housing, helping with low-cost medical expenses, or the costs of an unfamiliar city. RMHC has chapters in more than 64 countries with mobile options, family rooms, and grants for families in need.

How do I get involved?

You can get involved in a variety of ways! Here are some simple ways you can support your local RMHC or the entire organization:

  • Donating at your local McDonalds Restaurant
  • Volunteering
  • Joining the Raise Love campaign
  • Legacy Planning
  • Donating vehicles, toys, clothes, etc…

Families can often be overlooked in the whirlwind of the diagnoses of a child. Hope does exist, and there is a way to help. With organizations like the Ronald Mcdonald House Charities, families are no longer overlooked, and you can be a part of the cause too.
